GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT :
Summarize the nature and level of work performed.
Under general supervision of the supervisor the employee must satisfy all aspects of PHLEBOTOMIST 1 and complete training and maintain competency in at least two TIER 1 skills, and obtain National Certification in Phlebotomy.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
Achieve and maintain all competencies of Phlebotomist 1 for a minimum of three months
Complete training and successfully complete a three month experience period in at least two of the following skills .
PACE registration
EKG
Pediatric phlebotomy
Ancillary phlebotomy.
PACE E
Employees having completed training and demonstrated competency in PACE registration will provide the following services
.Check requisition for two patient identifiers
Log onto Patcom/IDX and select appropriate registration process
Print/reprint labels as necessary.
Place requisitions in holding queue according to prioritization guidelines.
Provide instructions to patients as needed to resolve problems with registration
Assist staff and coordinators with front desk issues.
EKG
Employees having completed training and demonstrated competency in EKG will provide the following services
Identify patient using two identifiers
Prepare patient for EKG tracing including proper placement in chair and any necessary skin preparation.
Attach leads to patient and insure proper EKG machine operation.
Complete tracing
Download file to cardiology and print as required
Patient cleanup and instructions
Clerical functions and filing.
Recognize basic abnormal rhythms and alert management as necessary
Compassionate and customer focused service to patients
Pediatric Phlebotomy
Employees having completed training and demonstrated competency in Pediatric Phlebotomy will provide the following services.
Specimen collection from infants, toddlers, school aged children and adolescents.
Demonstrated knowledge of the psychosocial needs of various pediatric age groups.
Specimen collection by skin puncture
Specimen collection by syringe
Correct order of draw for skin puncture blood and syringe blood collection.
Ability to interact with parents and guardians of pediatric patients
Demonstrated knowledge of specimen volume limits by patient weight
Ancillary phlebotomy.
Employees must complete training and any approiate competencies for at least two ancillary specimen collection areas including but not limited to IVF, MWU,OB-GYN, Be Fit and Sports medicine, or any applicable location in health centers. The employee will:
Demonstrate knowledge of the off site policy and procedure
Demonstrate knowledge of off site adverse reaction plan for each area.
Demonstrate off site procedures for emergency, evacuation, fire plan etc.
Demonstrate knowledge of inventory requirements and stock area as needed.
Be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
Follow all applicable policies and procedure when providing service at ancillary sites.
Notify supervision when problems arise
QUALIFICATIONS :
(MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
All qualifications as listed for PHLEBOTOMIST 1 plus a minimum of three months experience plus three months in each skill (may be concurrent per supervisory discretion)
Or
Equivalent/applicable experience in a former job and successful completion of on site competency in each skill.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED :

The PHLEBOTOMIST 2 candidate must have all skills and competencies as for PHLEBOTOMIST 1 plus;
Achieve and maintain active National Certification in phlebotomy (required for promotion)
Successful completion of all applicable competencies for chosen skills and minimum training and experience periods.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.
May be exposed to disease bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting including patient instability and /or unpredictability. Work environment may be noisy or crowded.
May be required to travel between buildings and outside. Due to travel outdoors, may have limited exposure to car fumes, noise, dust, chemicals and inclement weather.
