The Healthy Beginnings Program is a new initiative as the result of a Massachusetts Department of Public Health grant awa! rded to Community Health Improvement and Pediatrics, since Chelsea ranks fourth in Massachusetts for low birth weight, infant mortality, high teen pregnancies and indicators of poor maternal and child health outcomes. The program blends the two evidence based models of Healthy Steps and Healthy Families to both expand home visiting services to vulnerable, high risk mothers and families and to embed child development specialists into well-child visits from the child's 0 - 3 years to support all parents (with or without previously identified risk factors).

The goals of the program include strengthening parent-baby relationships, teaching parents techniques to support the common challenges of parenting, screening for developmental concerns, promoting healthy nutrition starting with breastfeeding support, providing important safety information to parents, supporting parents with the adjustment to and care for their children within their traditional cultural context, an! d preventing child abuse and neglect of children by providing ! guidance around healthy development, emotional support and encouragement to new parents who have multiple risk factors in order to help them nurture and care for their children in the early years. The program is built on the foundation that supporting the parenting relationship beginning from the pre-natal stage right through the first years of life is one of the most important protective factors to children and families later in life on multiple health and social indicators.

The Healthy Beginnings Fatherhood Coordinator is the position that provides overall guidance and leadership to strengthening fatherhood involvement in all of our early childhood work. This requires a strong background in and commitment to strategies and programs that include, welcome and engage fathers as well as training and supporting a shift among clinical providers in Obstetrics and Pediatrics to include fathers within the child’s care framework.

  • Support staff developme! nt focusing on the importance of engaging fathers, helping staff with plans to engage fathers and support staff training that inspires growth around this issue.
  • Develop strategies and programs that engage fathers in the care of their children.
  • Support the implementation of those strategies in Pediatric, Obstetrics and Community Health.
  • Tailor strategies and program to reach out to fathers of many cultures including recruiting, engaging and retaining fathers.
  • Provide guidance, training support and shadowing to providers in Obstetrics and Pediatrics about the importance of the role of fathers and how they can incorporate fathers in their care planning.
  • Partner with domestic violence advocates about how to involve fathers safely in the care of their children even in the midst of intimate partner violent relationships.
  • Support staff in Healthy Beginnings to formulate their case specific interventions with fathers, according ! to the needs of the families and the accordance with the evidence based! models and the needs of the Pediatric practice.
  • Use a bio-psycho-social framework to help staff have a strength-based approach to dealing with fathers and families â€" with a clear understanding of the difference between co-parenting and couples relationships.
  • Provide training to assist fathers to be physically, emotionally and financially involved parents.
  • Support the development of social networks for fathers to feel validated in their new role. This includes developing or bringing in curriculum for an educational group of fathers of soon to be born and new born babies â€" including recruitment, facilitation, data collection, data management and reporting of outcomes.
  • Role model best self health practices while encouraging father’s engagement in their own health care.
  • Help to ensure model fidelity as required by DPH.
  • Help to develop new policies and protocols that make the health center more father-friendly.
  • Support data collection as required by DPH.
  • Track outcomes of both training efforts and service delivery efforts. Enter these outcomes into the electronic medical record as well as our program evaluation data base.
  • Provide constructive shadowing on home visits to help staff identify solutions and plans of action.
  • Work with community health worker staff from other cultures on professional development and involvement in our fatherhood mission.
  • Actively participate in networks working towards program enhancement efforts.
  • Develop, engage, and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including health center staff and providers, MGH Boston staff, and community agencies.
  • Work closely with outside community agencies on coordinated service provision when needed.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies

Bachelor's degree required.
Masters Degree in Early Child Development, Psychology or Social Work prefe! rred.
Must be fluent in Spanish.
Must have at least 3 years of ! work experience, preferably in community outreach or related area.
