The! Registered Nurse is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts who is responsible and accountable for planning and providing patient care for assigned patients in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care as set forth in the Nursing Department’s Clinical Practice Manual.

The registered nurse demonstrates initiative, knowledge and clinical skills in caring for the
patient with complex needs. The Registered Nurse demonstrates the ability to effectively
manage patients by assuming full responsibility for the assessment, plan, implementation and
evaluation of patient care and is directly responsible to a designated nurse director, or
supervisor.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:CLINICAL PRACTICE:
A. Organization of Patient Care
1. Accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of care
for a specific patient assignment.
2. Sets priorities when organizing care for patients with ! varying acuity.
3. Maintain continuity through clear and c! oncise (verbal and written) communication.
4. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of growth and
development of the adult and geriatric patient. In areas, such as the NICU and Obstetrics
the principals of growth and development are applicable to the neonate.

B. Quality of Care:
1. Documents patient care in a manner that is clear, complete, concise and in compliance with
nursing documentation standards.
2. Develops a comprehensive plan of care based on data from an initial assessment of patient
and family, information from other members of the health care team, intra-agency referral
and previous medical records.
3. Develops a comprehensive educational plan for the patient and family, utilizing appropriate
resources and documents according to the department’s documentation standards.
4. Develops a comprehensive discharge plan utilizing appropriate resources and referrals
including community resources.
5. Eval! uates the effectiveness of the plan of care, and documents progress in meeting
stated goals. Revises plan of care as needed to achieve desired outcomes.
6. Participates actively in the unit-based and organizational quality management and/or
quality improvement programs.
7. Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors.
8. Administers medication safely according to established policies and procedures.
9. Performs nursing procedures safely and efficiently.
10. Uses equipment safely and efficiently.
11. Demonstrates awareness of potential/actual risks of infection and modes of transmission.
Utilizes universal precautions in nursing practice.

C. Coordination/Collaboration:
1. Interacts with patients, families, and colleagues in a professional manner.

Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS:A. Education:
Graduate of an approved schoo! l of nursing with current registration in
Massachusetts. For newly ! licensed nurses a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Nursing is required.

B. Experience:
Prior experience not required unless specified for certain specialty areas.

C. Other:
Membership in professional organizations is recommended and certification in
a specialty area is encouraged.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
The RN must show evidence of the basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of
patients. Must demonstrate observational skills and the ability to set priorities. Must be able to
function under stress with good interpersonal and communication skills. Must demonstrate
effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service, team work, communication,
respect for others, and time/priority management.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable
diseases and hazardous materials suc! h as chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopes, and radiation. Work entails walking and lifting.

EEO Statement: An EEO, AA, VEVRAA Employer Additional Information GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Under the supervision of Beth-Ann Norton, MS, RN, ANP-BC, the Nursing Program Director for the BWH Crohn’s and Colitis Center and under the direction of Joshua Korzenik, MD, Director of the BWH Crohn’s and Colitis Center and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nursing practice, the Registered Nurse will be responsible for the care of patients assigned to the BWH Crohn’s and Colitis Center. We aim to hire an individual who will be capable of functioning for the high level of clinical responsibilities necessary for the care of complex patients with a variety of problems related to IBD. In addition, our goal is t! o have this individual participate in developing and instituting innova! tions in clinical care. This position is being created to assist in the generation of a set of interlocking programs to help advance the clinical goals of improving education and care of this patient group. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical Responsibilities: Responds to messages coming into the practice and triages as needed. Works closely with the medical assistant and office assistants and delegates as appropriate. Assesses learning needs and educates patients and family as appropriate concerning disease management. Teaches patients SC injection technique and educates them about medications they are using, need for follow-up and side effects to notify the physicians/NP/PA about. Helps to develop an integrated plan of care with the team to assure patient’s needs are being met. Coordinates appropriate and timely scheduling of lab tests and follow-up assessments. Works with the NP/PA to ensure prescriptions are refilled in a timely fashion; lab results are re! viewed and results disseminated to patients. Also ensures that referrals to other specialists, radiological, endoscopic and laboratory testing are coordinated with patients and office staff. Assists with letters of medical necessity for prior authorizations, disability forms, and FMLA forms. Performs injections of B12, methotrexate, Stelara, Humira and Cimzia and plants PPDs as needed. This position involves helping design and implement programs involved in the care of patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and working with the individual in the PA/NP position as well as physicians and administrators to assure the success of these programs. Research Responsibilities Assists Center investigators and project manager in the coordination and monitoring of multi-center clinical research projects. Reviews and interprets abnormal laboratory values that occur in the context of central laboratory monitoring for trials. Serves as a resource for clinical and medical qu! estions that arise from investigators and study coordinators at partici! pating sites during multi-center studies, and participates in medical decision making. Assists with central drug dispensing/pharmacy distribution for trials as needed.Assists in coordination and implementation of research studies according to study protocols and performs required nursing procedures. Provides consultation to primary physicians, nurses and coordinators regarding protocol implementation. Assists with data collection form development. Works with lead coordinator and coordinators to develop and maintain innovative and systematic processes for recruitment and screening of potential study participants. Works with study staff to screen and enroll patients. Collaborates with Center investigators on an ongoing basis regarding progress of the study and continuation or termination of study subjects. Participates in Center’s research studies by acting as liaison between patients and other members of the team regarding the research protocol. Assesses learning needs and educates patients and family regarding the research procedures as appropriate. Coordinates appropriate and timely scheduling of lab tests and follow-up assessments per protocol.Helps to maintain research databases and uses the databases to extract information for recruitment, reporting, and QI. Maintains all required records. Assists with preliminary planning to identify and screen appropriate candidates for protocols and evaluates enrollment criteria. Program Development/Quality Improvement: This person will be responsible for guiding the development of a program focused on establishing a new model of care for! IBD. This individual will assist in setting the agenda, assuring the s! uccessful daily functioning of the project, be responsible for organizing meetings and coordination of activities required to integrate the various components of the clinical and research programs, including the clinical components, the care plan, the educational programs, the mobile app and website. They will help organize the programs to maintain the goals and timelines of the project. The PI, Dr Korzenik will work closely with this person supervising them to help build the program in a careful and timely manner.The overall goals of the program are to:
Develop educational tools so IBD patients can fully participate in this new patient-centered model. These tools will include in-person courses, web-based platforms for interactive educational experiences, mobile device applications (“apps”), and patient-generated videos and blog posts.
Integrate a variety of new services into traditional patient care, including diet and nutrition counseling, mental health assess! ment and services, stress management and resiliency training, and lifestyle coaching.
Establish an interdisciplinary healthcare team with the infrastructure necessary to provide patient-centered IBD care.
Evaluate the program to determine which elements could be included in a low-cost, transferable program that could be evaluated in a broad clinical trial.
Serve as an ongoing incubator to implement and evaluate innovative ideas for the care of IBD patients. QUALIFICATIONS:
Current nursing licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing, BSN required.
Previous experience in caring for patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease along the continuum in an academic medical center outpatient setting for a minimum of 3 years is required and preferably in a Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Must have a minimum of one year experience coordinating clinical research studies.
Must h! ave effective oral and written communication skills and work with multi! ple levels of staff.
Must have strong computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, and understanding of the electronic medical record system.
Ability to work well independently and collaboratively in the healthcare setting is required.
Ability to appropriately evaluate all aspects of a situation and to independently make appropriate and timely decisions. Working conditions: Works in a patient care environment where there is potential exposure to communicable disease and hazardous materials.
