QUALIFICATIONS:
Hold a High School diploma or equivalent and one of the following: AA degree, Earn 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution of higher education, Paraprofessional competency exam pass. Demonstrate required use of literacy and Nemeth braille for reading, writing, and translation purposes meeting the standards as prescribed by the National Library Service. Knowledge of basic math concepts; ability to read a variety of manuals; and writing documents. Ability to communicate and interact clearly, concisely courteously and respectfully with students, staff and guardians. Passage of the Washington state Unified English Braille exam or National Library Service for the Blind within one year of employment.
RESPONSIBILIES:
- Under the general direction of the Director of Special Services, this position provides support to the Teacher of Visual Impairment with student instruction, adapting materials to the student’s reading mode (Braille), and assisting with Braille instructions as directed by the teacher
- Adapts a variety of classroom materials for the purpose of implementing instruction to meet the needs of students
- Communicates with classroom staff and TVI for the purpose of providing the best way to adapt curriculum to meet the academic needs of students
- Maintains records for ensuring availability for required information
- Translates Braille to print and reversing translation for the benefit of students, staff and parents
- Monitors individual students for the purpose of providing assistance as needed and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment
