Women’s Health Policy and Advocacy Program

at the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, welcomes applications for a part-time Health Policy Research Assistant (“Research Assistant”) position. The program is based within the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology, an interdisciplinary initiative combining clinical care, research, education, and policy analysis with the goal of improving the health of women and transforming their care. The mission of the Women’s Health Policy and Advocacy Program is

to inform and advance policy at all levels â€" local, state and national â€" to promote the highest standard of health and health care for women.

The Program collaborates with policymakers and women’s health advocates to inform and advance key issues that affect women as patients, caregivers, and managers of family health, and to advocate for change. The program encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, including:

building awareness of emerging policy issues in women’s health;

producing issue briefs, reports, and peer-reviewed publications on key topics in women’s health;

presenting research at local and national conferences;

facilitating communication between policymakers and clinical leaders;

hosting collaborative meetings with public officials, clinical leaders and health care activists;

proposing and drafting legislation; and

providing testimony for legislative hearings.

The Program’s approach with each particular issue varies according to the existing political environment, the type of expertise the hospital is able to bring to that topic, and opportunities in the policy arena. At present, key topics include health care reform in Massachusetts and nationally; physician shortages in specialties that particularly impact women (inc. primary care, ob/gyn, mammography, mental health); and women and lung cancer.. Additional focus areas are possible consistent with the Program’s mission.

Responsibilities of the Research Assistant

: The Research Assistant will be an integral part of the Program and may participate in any of the activities listed above. Under the supervision of the Program’s Director and Senior Policy Analyst, the Research Assistant may take primary responsibility for a

new

policy issue ranging from literature review and scan of the policy environment; developing goal(s) and a strategic plan; meeting with relevant clinical leaders and/or researchers; developing policy recommendations; drafting a report or other document, and developing / executing a dissemination plan. Topics might include health disparities; women and aging; chronic disease management, or other areas. Alternatively, the Research Assistant position may participate in any of the activities outlined above with regard to on-going work of the program

Requirements:
Preferred skills/experience

:

Background in health policy analysis, public policy and/or the legislative process

Strong grasp of the multiple factors (political, economic, public opinion, etc.) influencing policy development at the local, state and national levels

Familiarity with issues in health care reform at the state and national level, and/or a clinical background

Excellent written, verbal, organization and research skills

Comfort interacting with people at all levels, including high-level individuals

Familiarity with the role and environment of academic medicine

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Ability to adapt rapidly to new opportunities

Starting date and hours per week are flexible, and the program will provide work space, computer and internet access. Please note that the program’s work is primarily focused on domestic issues rather than global women’s health.
