Responsibilities: GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: As a member of the Center for Fetal Medicine (CFM) and Prenatal Genetic! s at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the genetic counselor will be responsible for counseling patients and families concerning genetic issues, including, but not limited to: maternal serum screening, family history concerns, ultrasound abnormalities, prenatal diagnostic testing procedures, infertility, and pregnancy exposure to drugs, alcohol, and medication. This individual also serves as a resource to patients and medical staff regarding genetic issues and is involved in developing new programs for patient and staff as needed to advance the Genetic Counseling Program. The genetic counselor will work closely with patients during stressful times and provide support and education about sensitive issues. May need to provide services at satellite locations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Counsels patients/families around genetic issues (Amniocentesis, Maternal, Serum Screening Program, Chorionic Villius Sa! mpling, Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling, Genetic Disorde! rs, etc).. This involves patient contact, explanation of procedures, probable outcome, all testing coordination, and follow up. Screens and interviews patients to evaluate medical/family information. Recommends and coordinates additional testing and referrals with referring providers, outside hospital facilities, and genetic testing laboratories.
2. Implements and coordinates special programs as needed to accommodate patients and providers.
3. Performs administrative record keeping, including chart preparation and records requests, maintenance of statistics, documentation of encounter (including chart notes, progress notes, and letters, and other required paperwork for genetic tests or procedures.
4. Develops and maintains effective relationships with patients, CFM staff, and other referring providers. Provides education and consultation to referring providers as needed with concerns about scheduling, test follow-up, or general queries about non-scheduled patien! ts.
5. Actively updates knowledge of current trends and developments in the field and genetic community by reading appropriate professional literature, attending educational meetings, and making use of other available resources for continuing education.
6. Serves as resource to patients, obstetrical care providers and other clinicians on genetic counseling issues.
7. Interacts with Cytogenetic Laboratory and other send-out laboratories. Calls normal and abnormal results to patients and providers, including calling out results to patients who have not received genetic counseling when necessary.
8. Calls normal and abnormal Maternal Serum Screen results to patients and providers, including calling out results to patients who have not received genetic counseling when necessary.
9. Participates in research projects including patient recruitment, clinical data abstraction, and data entry maintenance of required computer databases and communication with princi! pal investigator and other sites.
10. Genetic counselors designated ! to see patients at satellite sites, in addition to the above duties, will be expected to assume a role of clinic coordinator and will work with the satellite site to schedule patients for genetic counseling within the framework of that clinic site.
11. Counselors at satellite sites will also be responsible for working with referring medical staff to ensure appropriate referral for patients needing genetic counseling by means of communication with the referring provider as well as giving educational presentations to groups of providers.
12. Performs other duties as required or assigned, including back-up coverage for other counselors when necessary.
Requirements: QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of two years experience in the field of Genetic Counseling or at least 1 year of directly related experience preferred.
American Board of Medical Genetics Certification in Genetic Counseling (or Board Eligible)
License in Genetic Counseling in the state of Massachus! etts (or provisional license).
Master’s Degree: MS/MA with specialty in Genetics or Genetic Counseling
Bachelor’s Degree: BS/MA
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Ability to set goals and to implement them. Able to provide guidance to staff members and to utilize sound judgment in human resources-related decisions. Strong organizational skills. Good communication skills especially in the areas of interpersonal skills, negotiation, sensitivity in counseling areas. Aptitude in basic sciences, especially in the area of genetics, as well as ability in the area of working in stressful situations within specific time frames while maintaining a calm, professional attitude. Good interpersonal skills.
