Responsibilities: Position Executive Director, Development Operations

Opportunity Proposition You will be joining Brigham & Women's Hospital at a very exciting time as they embark on the largest comprehensive campaign in their history. By ensuring operational excellence and applying a best practice approach you will naturally affect the results of this campaign and the ongoing fundraising efforts of the hospital. You will be a critical member of the senior team and interface regularly with the hospital leadership. The Executive Director, Development Operations will play a major role in the strategic planning and future direction of the Development Department.
Principle Responsibili! ties Reporting to the Brigham and Women's (BWH) Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Executive Director, Development Operations will have three senior-level direct reports and will oversee a staff of fifteen to twenty.The Executive Director, Development Operations will have direct responsibility for the revenue-generating Direct Mail unit and the following administrative units supporting the fundraising enterprise: Information Services and Gift Processing; Human Resources, Organizational Development and Talent Management; Financial Reporting and Budgeting; Strategic Planning; and all administrative activities of the BWH Development Office including building facilities.The Executive Director, Development Operations serves as the center point for planning, operational management, policy and process formulation and improvement, and organizational, strategic direction and individual performance evaluation. He or she will serve as one of four executive ! leaders within the BWH Development Office to whom all internal and exte! rnal BWH stakeholders look for results. As a key member of this executive leadership team, the Executive Director will bring vision, imagination and significant demonstrated experience leading, managing and building a campaign development organization of significant scope and complexity.The Executive Director will bring a comprehensive, collaborative, and quantitative results-driven approach to planning and measuring development effectiveness and return on investment, while possessing the professional maturity, stature and ability to effectively build relationships and alliances with internal and external constituencies.The Executive Director will contribute positively to the BWH culture in which passion for the mission, dedication to excellence, collaboration, and mutual respect are long-standing guiding principles and attributes.The Executive Director will build strong, collaborative relationships and maintain regular communications with colleagues throughout the Developm! ent Office and across BWH and Partners HealthCare, including Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs, Human Resources, Facilities and Planning, Research Administration, Finance, Information Services and the Office of the General Council.The Executive Director is expected to be the primary coordinator of any and all fiduciary agencies, retained resources and consultancies engaged by the BWH development organization.
Specific Duties • Develop and implement an annual operating plan and associated metrics in partnership with the Associate Chief Development Officer (ACDO) that support meeting the BWH annual fundraising goal. In addition, ensure that the operational and infrastructure departments are staffed and provided the resources to support the fundraising initiatives.• Establish performance planning, organizational development and capacity-building initiatives, operating policies and practices that will ensure transparency and staff accountability.• On behalf! of the COO, and in partnership with the executive leadership team, lea! d strategic and operational planning, policy development, problem solving, conflict resolution and crisis management (as and if needed).• Oversee development and implementation of organizational effectiveness efforts, including talent acquisition and retention, professional development and training, internal communications, and other matters related to Human Resources.• Build collaborative partnerships across BWH including: senior executive leadership; the Board of Trustees; physicians and scientists; high-level volunteers; the President's Advisory Council; and members of board committees and other ad hoc groups or teams as assigned by the COO.• Provide insightful, strategic and hands-on operational leadership across all areas of management responsibility seeking, wherever possible, total transparency and efficiency and the seamless integration of development with other relevant functional areas (Le., marketing and public affairs, research administration, legal counse! l, finance, information systems, etc.) of BWH and Partners senior administration.• Develop operational understanding of and provide strategic insight to the Direct Mail Program. • Serve as the primary executive officer responsible for compliance with and application of all Partners and BWH policies and procedures as well as adherence to any and all donor gift restrictions or other relevant contractually stipulated requirements.
Requirements: Professional and Personal Profile The successful candidate will be an effective and seasoned manager and leader, able to actualize the interrelationship between the development program and BWH's mission and goals. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess strong operations and finance experience and an understanding of organizational development/talent management and technology and systems; an understanding of fundraising practices and strategies is a plus.• Ability to engage, support, and collaborate effectively wi! th senior executive and development leadership, physicians, scientists,! and high-level volunteers, and credibly lead colleagues throughout the Development Office• Proven ability to lead high-performing, self-directed teams, expanding capacity and strengthening performance while preserving cultural attributes and innovating as needed• Intellectual capital, stature, and integrity to build alliances with the various constituencies of BWH and egoless leadership to meet the philanthropic goals of BWH• Defined track record of results in building institutional capacity to drive philanthropic revenue in Direct Mail.• Highly advanced and nuanced managerial skills to promote partnerships across BWH and Partners HealthCare resulting in a thorough and inclusive development planning and execution process.• Demonstrated record of establishing performance management systems that celebrate and recognize exemplar performance while systematically providing education, coaching, motivation and monitoring to raise the level of performance of all staff.â€! ¢ Superb communication skills (both written and oral).• Established record of financial management and demonstrated experience with multiunit financial planning, budgeting, accounting and modeling with advanced analytical and critical thinking skills to summarize and visually represent data.• Team player with a collaborative style and flexibility, comfortable with ambiguity as decision processes evolve over time, with the ability to refine strategies after feedback from key stakeholders.• Judgment, tact and discretion in handling highly-sensitive information and a proven ability to maintain utmost confidentiality, unflinching integrity seasoned with a sense of humor, perspective and wisdom.• Strong personal work ethic, self-motivated, results-oriented, proactive professional with initiative, sound judgment and patience• Collaborative, positive, motivational style with an ability to demonstrate humility and thoughtfulness.• Bachelor's degree is required; post-bac! calaureate degree is strongly beneficial, particularly in a field relat! ed to the position responsibilities. Eight or more years of demonstrated experience in operations, finance and administration, and human resources and/or IT and extensive experience supervising professionals is required.
