SUMMARY OF POSITION :
The Senior Nurse reports directly to the Associate Medical Directors. As a member of the Clinical Leadership committee, the Se! nior Nurse contributes to the overall clinical management of the organization to ensure the Medical Home teams perform their duties to a high standard. The Senior Nurse supervises all Nursing and Medical Assistant personnel to ensure the highest-level of patient care and satisfaction. The Senior Nurse works collaboratively with the Director of Operations, Director of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement and the Office Managers to ensure operational efficiency and that productivity targets are met. This position is 50% clinical and 50% administrative.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS :
This position requires sitting, bending, stooping, and stretching. It requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate forms and reports as needed

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Administrative: Ensures effective operation of the clinical services of Adult Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Urgent Care, and Specialty Clinics to assure high patient and provider satisfaction, and to avoid duplication of resources Makes clinical workforce planning and scheduling decisions and assigns nursing staff based on competency level, and patient and departmental needs Oversees clinical policy implementation Co-chairs the safety committee Ensures effective communication between the clinical and administrative staff Participates as a member of appropriate internal committees Participates and manages the development of clinical protocols for primary care departments. Works closely with Direct! or of QI & PI around the development and ongoing management of clinical audit and analysis of subsequent outcomes Works collaboratively with the Director of Operations to insure productivity targets and customer satisfaction Participates in annual budget preparation and ensure regular review of and compliance with budget. Clinical:
Works 50% of the time as a clinical nurse and manage clinical services Offers clinical advice, care and support to patients and their families Provides clinical advice and support to health care professionals Implements and monitors infection control, Emergency Preparedness, waived testing, medical information management and medication management guidelines as required under Joint Commission Standards Responds to patient concerns as needed to ensure the highest level of patient satisfaction Personnel:
Supervises Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Medical Assistants in all areas of responsibility Participates in the hiring a! nd firing processes in accordance to Whittier policy Conducts/oversees ! 90-day and the annual performance appraisals for all nursing staff Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical competencies Ensures clinical supervision and competency assessment Offers support and advice to the administrative team on clinical matters Provides staff with regular feedback individually and collectively at staff meetings Education & training:
Responsible for providing appropriate opportunities for nursing staff to ensure staff development (orientation, education and in-service) plans are in place and acted upon Responsible for the provision of education and educational resources for nursing staff Research and Development:
Responsible for a culture of evidence based practice within the organization Participates in research and development projects in collaboration with external agencies if required Professional:
Acts within the code of medical ethics, and adhere to professional standards Pursues personal and professional! development Public Relations:
Actively engages in the promotion of the clinical services offered by Whittier Responsible for the updating and developing clinical services information for patients and health care professionals

Required Experience/Abilities/Competencies:

  • Minimum 5 years post registered nurse experience and demonstrated high-level clinical competency.
  • Three to five years experience in a leadership/management role
  • Ability to understand the Whittier strategic plan in the context of the clinical service
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations and the ability to implement Joint Commission Standards
  • Team management skills
  • Experience in providing supervision and delivering performance review
  • Ability to provide an appropriate environment for the retention and development and education of staff
  • Strong problem solving skills and self-moti! vation
  • Demonstrates commitment to diversity and cultural compe! tency in the work environment
  • Demonstrates integrity and compassion in employee and patient interactions
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and experience in clinical practice
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook and other computer software
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records Systems
Licensure/Education/Training:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Current license to practice nursing in the state of Massachusetts
